They are all pages from a condensed Reader's Digest and were sewn together and painted. As seen here they were left out through snow and rain and high winds and nature! hence the disintegration collaboration put on by Seth Apter.
This wonderful collaboration has brought so many artists from around the world together, all with mother nature in its many forms as the collaborator.

As part of "Buried Treasure" here is my re post of an earlier one, from June of 2006,that reminds me of those serendipitous moments we have as artists. Combining art and life comes to me at times and seems profound looking back. Always reminding me to enjoy every moment of this life we have.

We ride through the turbulent weather
with a heavy heart.
Through the doubt we arise
and conquer our fears.
For the wind carries us to new heights
and life continues to surprise us.

Summer has just begun and the promise of loveliness is upon us. Let us not waste a moment of this precious time. Go out and enjoy that warming sun, smell those fragrant flowers, feel those gentle breezes, dive into the water and emerge refreshed, rejuvenated, and relish in the feelings of summer.

EXCITING NEWS
I will be teaching at the Elliot School in Jamaica Plain, MA on July 30th and August 6th, as part of their Green Craft program this summer. My class "Papermaking Art from Recycled Materials" will be a two part class. The first class we will make paper from junk mail, paper tube rolls and discarded paper. Then the second class I will have a display of artwork using the paper and begin our projects from first weeks class! I am very excited about this and hope you can join me.

After snow, cold, high winds, rain, heat and other natural going ons the unveiling of my disintegration project is completed. Observing the many other collaborators, I decided to add midway some used steel wool to add some rusty goodness. Although the changes are subtle there are definately changes.

I am eager to see where all this takes us on a journey of disintegration. Seth at the Altered Page has come up with this project so check out his blog to read about the beginning. Enjoy and I will keep you updated.

The calendar has told us it is spring and the birds are starting to chirp and a single crocus has sprouted. Definatly signs of spring.

Lots happening in my world with artwork. Above is a present I gave to my sister for her birthday. It is a new series of painting/collage on canvas that I have been working on. It is relaxing and keeping in the tradition of using recycled materials.
I am enjoying the process, so keep checking for more pieces in the series.

Having some altered book pages that I didn't know what to do with I thought I would use them. I hung them out on the fence next to the lilac trees in hopes for some interesting effects. While trying to get back some thoughts that have been hibernating I came across this artist Hollis Chatelain. What amazing quilts!!! The detail below is just a sample of what this incredible artist is doing. Check out the website for all the wonderful pieces. There is a traveling exhibit that is planned for 2010. I'm hoping it comes to the Boston Area.

Blog surfing is my release lately. It takes me away from the holiday season and brings me to a safe, creative enjoyable time. During my surfing I have found Robyn's Blog from South Africa. I love the carvings she does.

This picture shows one of her works and her workspace. I love this picture because it incorporates nature and process. Check out this jewel of a blog. I am still exploring all it's treasures.

I find it funny hummmm not funny ha ha, that there are so many things to share in this world. A need to connect, a need to share, a need to feel human with the full range of emotions. Our emotions are our connection to every other human being in this world. It is our tracking system to bringing to our lives what we desire. There is so much to learn. Ways to bring peace to one another. To be kind. To give.

I just finished this book and rereading the next. It is a daily reminder we have work to do.

It is amazing how we are all a link away.

Through web surfing I was brought to Karin Bartimole's blog which is filled with her daily journal pages and wonderful thoughts. I feel like she is a soul sister and is on a similar path as myself. Go to her site to check these wonderful little morsals.

We are all connected in some way. We are humans that are connected by thoughts, actions, concerns.... We have passion, we have hurts, we have experiences that bring us all together.

The stirrings of the true spirit of Sprinkles is seeping back into my conscious. Where it will take me I don't know. But what I do know it is important.

It's been a long time and I am finally ready to post again. In the time away there is always thinking, wondering, waiting...
what is this thing called life? where do we go? where are we coming from?
so many people come and go through life's journey and we are still the same person who stands with ourselves. Rethinking art and what is important I have come to some realizations that I am ready to share.
the love of sharing creativity is so very important. I collect and collect from the discards in the hopes to pass these along to someone who will cherish and use these wonderful pieces.
Today I have come across Seth Apter who has a rich blog full of giving. Check out his wonderful textured mixed media work.
Also visiting Alma Stoller's blog you can view her wonderful new zine called soul craft.
These two people have sparked that flame once again to reach out and start doing instead of just thinking. I am seriously thinking of doing a new issue of Sprinkles the zine with a new twist. Then in the spirit of giving I want to have a give away. Paper, paper, paper everywhere..... Boston Book Arts Presents SHELTER:
a Unique Vision of a Universal Subject Through Artist’s Books

SHELTER focuses attention on a universal subject and one of humanity’s most basic needs – in all its manifestations: the home, the psychology of personal space, current issues in the housing market such as homelessness, the mortgage crisis and loss of historic fabric. 43 artists have been chosen to participate in SHELTER, an exhibition of artist’s books juried by Janine Wong, faculty member in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at UMASS/Dartmouth.

The exhibit is on view at the Wedeman Gallery at Lasell College in Newton, MA from April 10th to April 22nd. The public is cordially invited to attend the opening reception to be held on Thursday April 10th from 4pm to 7pm.

The gallery is located in the Yamawaki Arts & Cultural Center at 49 Myrtle Avenue on the corner of Grove Street in Newton. The exhibit is free and open to the public Monday - Sunday 12 pm - 5 pm.

Come visit me on Sunday April 13, from noon to 5, I will be gallery sitting and would love to see you all.

March - Life in Brown

Although I was very enthusiastic about the color brown this month, life threw a curve ball. Work had layoffs and the bulk of the people let go effected me directly.
Above is how we ended the month of March. The last day of March we drove to NYC and picked up our new family member Mikko. He is brown and rust and such a loveable dog.

The paper quilts are still coming and here is Life in Brown under construction.

Women of the Cloth Exhibit

I am excited to have my work work represented in the Women of the Cloth Exhibit. There are a lot of talented Women in the Boston area, so if your in the neighborhood stop by. The exhibit runs from March 6 - April 18, 2008 at Bunker Hill Community College. My Mini Art Quilt Affirmation will be exhibited.

The Artist's Reception is Thursday, March 6, 2008 starting at 6:00 pm with a live performance by Libana at 7:30 pm. My fellow Boston Handmade artist Linda Dunn is represented by two of her quilts, and Jeanne Williamson of uncommon quilter is also in the exhibit.

Life in Red

February's color was red and was not as inspiring as white. I'm not sure if it was the environment of being surrounded by white that was making me so productive. I've made two 12 x 12 inch paper quilts that are finished and one that is sewn on fabric that needs to be finished.

In response to the colors being affected by my environment I will be tackling brown for March's color. I was contemplating green for spring but I will hold off.

Here is a sneak peak at what I've been working on lately.
My adventures in the color months has lead me to this new body of work that has had my creative juices flowing. Life in White was a wonderful inspiration and I am having a hard time not making "white"work.
Even though February is Life in Red and I've started some 12 x 12" red quilts I squeezed in a piece based on green. The materials inspired me to create this quilt called "Breathe."

January in White

What a wonderful month of white. Trying a new approach to making art I chose to make art by color. I started the month collecting all my white ephemera, cutting paper to different size squares, and using all the white materials I had. Starting with journals, a continuation of what I had been doing, I started a rhythm of making little collages. This continued to grow throughout the month into making two larger collage pieces and a paper quilt. What a wonderful journey I have started for 2008. As soon as the paper quilt is finished I will take pics and post them.
Here is a mini-art quilt that was also made in January for a show that I did not get in.
February has started and the gears switch to the color RED! I have a feeling pinks will pop up too. What a lovely motivation.

Thought you might like to see the before and after studio comparison. I still deal with the clutter of having so much. The artwork ideas have been rolling in and there are not enough hours in a day to do everything. A new direction that has been perk-o-lating for a very long time now is finally rising to the surface. My first paper quilt is almost finished and I will post pictures next.
The studio worktable needs a freshen up for these larger works but I'm hoping they will come fast and furious. However a "Leap and Sleep" with my Girl Scout troop at a gymnastics place tonight will postpone my creativeness. I will slow cook the ideas for a little bit longer.

Oh how we have such good intentions at the beginning of the year and how soon the old habits of life take over. I am looking at the date and realizing it is only the second week of 2008 and my intentions of what I wanted to do and what I am doing are not jiving.

A quilt means different things to different people. To a child it is a comfort in the cold, dark, night. To a Grandmother it is a patchwork memory of worn skirts, tea towels, and clothes outgrown. To an artist a quilt can be a story made of buttons and yarn, photographs and feathers, found objects and branches. When the tradition of quilt making intersects with the contemporary world of art making anything can happen. History, Story, Warmth: Quilt presents the work of three New England artists, Jessica Burko, Michelle Jones, and Dawn Wilson. Each of these artists embraces the historical traditions of quilt making and infuses it with their own brand of whimsy and invention. Using text, vintage photographs, variations in scale, and detailed pictorial stitching, these works challenge conventional notions of what it means to be a quilt.

FRESH START

Well Hellooooooooo
Wipe the slate clean and start fresh. I love the first of the year. Being able to start anew with ideas, directions, and anything else your heart desires. This is my annual Feng Shui mentality of clearing the clutter. Taking the day off from work yesterday I concentrated on my first goal of the new year, CLEAN THE STUDIO! Here are some before photos

Yesterday i dove right in and went through the shelves. Reorganizing, relabeling, weeding out the things I don't use. It was a productive day but let me tell you it is more than a one day project. I will keep you posted.

One of my other goals is to work on artwork based on color. I will be exploring my directions in art with a color theme per month. January will start with WHITE, but of course. It is all around. I have started early and noticed that I am looking at life in a new way. It is leading me in new directions. Here is my first artwork of the new yearJournal 99 white. This is a 5" x 5" journal made from recycled materials plate material, reclaimed paper, ephemera with paint and found objects.

As part of the second annual Salem Open Studios, Feed Your Head will be hosting a Boston Handmade Trunk Show on Saturday, December 8, from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday, December 9, from 10 am to 5 pm.

The Etsy Boston group, Boston Handmade, is a gathering of artists and designers who support one another in the pursuit of creativity made by hand. All members of Boston Handmade are registered sellers on www.etsy.com, an online marketplace for buying and selling all things handmade, and are locally based in Massachusetts.

The Boston Handmade Trunk Show will offer a unique experience for shoppers to support local artists, designers, and business while getting a leg up on holiday shopping and enjoying light refreshments. Trash to Treasure - New Scarves

These scaves are made from designer fabric sample books. Normally when the material is no longer available the books get thrown away. The fabric has never been used other than to show off fabric in bite size pieces. My favorite decorating place Ace Glass and Decorating saves the books for me. I take the fabric from the books and prepare it by cutting it into strips. I start by picking a color and build on that theme. These one of a kind scarves are assembled on a sewing machine. The ends are then hand sewn and embellished with fancy yarns or vintage buttons.

What a wonderful day at the Garden in the Woods. It was last Saturday already and my daughter and I took a trek over to Framingham for a new adventure. It has been on my to do list since June and in the last week i finally got there. What a wonderful adventure we had. We wandered the forest and found a wonderful place to make a fairy house.
There were only a few couples wandering around. It felt like a magical experience being in such a wonderful place. It also gave my daughter and I some time together in nature loving every minute of the experience. Surprises around every corner.

It is getting close to the holidays and usually there a plethora of cards that get sent around this time. If you are not one of those people that collects and reuses cards, PLEASE consider sending holiday cards to St. Jude's Ranch, a nonprofit home for youths that collects old holiday cards for reuse. Either cut off the backs of the cards or leave them intact. Children at St. Jude's earn money by creating new holiday cards from the old.

Busy Week

It was such a great creative week. Up at 4 am most mornings cranking on the art and lovin' it. Friday night I went to see Owen Plant with Ryanhood, what a great surprise they were fantastic.
Saturday I went to Belchertown to visit artist Sharon Macarthy at her home with her new studio addition. What a dream studio and beautiful house she has. I also went to the Fiber Arts Center to see the exhibit "Fiber + Book" which was an interesting exhibit. I enjoyed the natural fiber aspect and the creative expression of the book.

Creative Energy

It is so amazing how the creative process works. I spent a Saturday with my friend Jessica Burko and since that day the creative juices have been overflowing. So many new projects in the works. I just got accepted to "Women's Night Out" here in Grafton, MA so come visit on October 19th from 7-10 pm. I will have brand new journals (the beginning of these are pictured above), tin lid collage and many other surprises. I am also working on recreating my website and my new business cards were ordered yesterday. Oh I can't wait to see how they come out!!!

Trash to Treasure - ATC's

A new feature will be my trash to treasure posts. Having been thinking about the artwork I do and where I get my supplies I have come up with a before and after if you will. Obsessed with rescuing items from the trash I found these papers and chipboard. The buttons came from a swap.
Participating in a Welcome Swap with Boston Handmade of ATC's I thought these supplies would be perfect. I cut the chipboard to 3 x 2-1/2" Then I sew the hearts to paper or fabric. Punching holes in the chipboard I sew through the paper/fabric with yarn. Finish it off with sewing or gluing on buttons and wallah ATC's for trading. Summer

With the summer over I look back to see where the time has gone.
MAY
Having many "BIG" projects to do the month of May was a little overwhelming, to say the least. My sister was to be married in July and the invitations that I was making needed to be done. With a last hurrah weekend we finished assembling them and out in the mail they went. WOW what a lot of work.
There was also my first Providence Open Market show which was a great experience but at the wrong time. I set up with my friend Natalie Gillihan of Lake Quinsigamond Pottery and we had a fantastic day.
To finish out the month my first CD design job was completed and sent to the printers. Check out Lisa Martin LIVE Lisa is a singer songwriter and is very talented. Acoustic Folk Rock is her genre and she kicks you know what.
JUNE
Well with School ending and a Girl Scout finale of camping and bridging event where I was honored with the Leader of the Year, to my surprise. Thank you all who wrote letters and nominated me, you are all very special.
My sister's bridal shower, that had a lot of coordinating and planning, I breathed a sigh of relief that it was over.
With doing all of these things in such a short span of time I decided I would just hibernate. We moved down to our summer camp after the kids got out of school and vegged. I didn't pick up any artwork until late July. I was burnt out. No more shows I said. NOTHING....
JULY
July was the rejuvination month which lasted until August. Being by the water and just chilling. Not having to be anywhere, no deadlines. Well except for THE wedding day which was such a beautiful day and went very smoothly. My children were like a princess and prince and I saw them as wonderful beings who are so bright and innocent from this world. "What a wonderful world" - Louis Armstrong

Well April was a busy month but the highlights were joining the Etsy Boston Street Team which has now turned into Boston Handmade

Joining such a wonderful group of talented people was the kick start I needed to get my business ideas in gear.
Here is a treasurey Amy Olsen put together for the group.

I am excited to be part of this group and will be making changes to the website and shop to accomodate the new ideas.

Another highlight was going to see Owen Plant at Passim.

He is a talented singer songwriter that I have had the pleasure to meet. Check out his website to hear some of his music.

Summer love

Well Hellllllooooooooooooooooo
I am breaking out of my summer cocoon and returning to civilization. We are so fortunate to live at my inlaws lake cottage for the summer. It is a magical place to unwind and relax. No TV, computers etc... Although we still work it slows life down a bit to connect with nature and each other.
So much has gone on during this summer I will fill you all in soon. I am gearing up for the Fall and busy-ness of life. Artwork has been good and little by little I've been doing more of it.

Rainy NorEaster

Well in New England you never know what your gonna get for weather. Today we had a NorEaster which in the winter would have been feet of snow. Instead it's inches of rain. Good day to hang out with the kids. We had a fun day. 1st Ange came up with an art project we will be working on this week. We made a large slide like viewer to look at the sky. then we painted it on a small piece of paper. we each are making a strip of them.
Then it was shaving cream on the glass table. They could have done that all day. of course you need to wash it off so into the tub with bathing suits and fits of laughter. WOW I wish I could get so energized from it all like they do.

Life is amazing

I am amazed daily at how life unfolds in front of our eyes. Last saturday I had a play date with my dear friend Jess. It was pure heaven. We did our artwork, we talked about artwork, we laughed what a gift from heaven. Since I have been jazzed and experimenting with different media combinations. Embossing powder, fusible webbing, fibers, burning paper, resin necklaces, book arts and everyday something else evolves.

I also had chai with Mary and talked more about art. What a perfect day.

The universe is redirecting me to live my joy. It is possible. Everyday to choose your thoughts, redirect my thoughts, choose the good thoughts because we are our thoughts. If you haven't read the Hicks book series you should look them up. If I can soak up this information and start living it my life will change dramatically and all for the better.

I also met Linda Brescia this week. What a generous artistic soul. She told me about this book, wonderful techniques and eye candy if you love texture.

So life is coming into the season of spring. I wish you bursting buds, large pink and orange gerber daisies, and the sun shining on your face.

Summer2

This summer is flying by and I haven't posted in a long time. Life is good and busy. There are alot of projects in the works. I have been working on some websites, taking a class making glass beads(lampwork) wow working with molten glass is a trip. of course that leads back to making jewelery again...a show at Udderly Delicious come November, joined Artisan Women of Worcester and the kids go back to school in less than 3 weeks. The pace of the summer has been a quick steady march through time and yet I still have had time to watch dragonflies mate, a white dove arrive and hang around for several days, soak up the hot sultry sun while swimming in the lake. Life is exactly what we make of it. Enjoy the rest of this summer and I will be back soon.

We have moved down to the family camp for the summer. It has been raining so the mood has changed. Last year was so wonderful and I am waiting to recapture that feeling. Indie Weekend

Rain Rain go away come back another day Dawn and Sarah want to play.
Well the rain came and went and came again and again and again.
Well my first craft show in a long time and it rained off and on all day. But the GREAT thing about this is that I did some artwork, had a tarot card reading for the first time, met some fantastic people and will be joining Artisan Woman of Worcester. At the end of the day I traded for this wonderful umbrella made by Sarah along with a handpainted silk

scarf and other wonderful treasures. Check out this wonderful shelf unit I used for display! $5 bucks at Goodwill in Boston!!! Gotta love the colors and the little ball magnets that David bought me to hang the necklaces on!!! LOVE IT!!!
After the event we went out for Indiam food my favorite. Unfortunately when we got there it was closed so we opted for Sushi. Although I tried some it is definately not my favorite food. Oh well adventures come in all sizes and shapes.
When I arrived home Tyler lost his first tooth, gotta love that dirty face mr. popsicle man. and the tooth fairy brought him $10.00 for his first lost tooth. Holy moly take my teeth tooth fairy. So life is wonderful, life is good, let that rain come and fill the lake. creatively dawn

Memorial Day has come and gone. We marched in the Grafton parade as Girl Scouts. Then after a fly by and wonderous ceramony we went clothes shopping for some much needed attire. Then on our way to camp we sat for 45 during the Manchaug ceramony. Of course Manchaug is a subtown of sutton and has maybe 100 people that live there. But none the less off to camp we made it and took a relaxing boat ride with some wonderful company and the kids actually behaved. Life is good. No artwork this weekend but this week will be getting ready for the 1st Indie Arts & Crafts Festival. Hope to see ya there. If not I will be working on opening a store on Etsy to sell my wares. Hopefully I can get to it in the next couple of weeks. Creatively Dawn.

Long Weekend

Here is a sneak peak of a piece I am working on.
It is the start of the long weekend and I'm hoping to get some artwork done. I keep looking at different blogs and get inspired by all the honesty and artwork out there. We need to remember to live each day and not just think about the day or the next chore. Our minds need silence and meditation is a great way to do this. Life is good... What a wonderful day we had yesterday at Lisa Martin and Brad's house. It was euphoric with the sun shining, peacefulness, good food and friends.

Closer to Fine

Taught my first Mini Art Quilts workshop and it was fantastic. The students were great and the energy high. I'm going to teach another on May 27th 3-6pm at Udderly Delicious. Also went to dinner with two dear friends and caught up over scrumptious salmon. Afterwards, went back to the "big pink house" and listened to Owen Plant who rocks out. Inspiration abound!

Dr. Wayne Dyer says "Don't die with your music still inside you," and I've taken this to heart. There is a part of me that has been pushed to the back burner for long enough. I've choosen this to some extent, but now the true to myself me is pushing it's way out and it is time to live the life I've dreamed of.

That is why I am up at 5 am with boundless creative energy.
